OpenAI has paused new sign-ups and upgrades to its $200 ChatGPT Pro plan, also called Pro 20X. Existing $200 subscribers can still renew, but Free, Go, Plus, and Pro $100 users cannot enter the tier while the pause remains active.

The pause is a capacity measure tied to GPT-6 Astra. Tibo Sottiaux, who works on Codex and ChatGPT at OpenAI, called demand for Astra unprecedented and said existing users would receive priority.

Why OpenAI Paused the $200 Tier

OpenAI warned on September 9 that it might pause new Pro subscriptions if Astra demand continued. On September 10, the company confirmed the pause and said $200 subscriptions put the most strain on its systems.

OpenAI described the pause as the smallest step that would preserve broad access. Other ChatGPT plans and the API remain available while the company adds capacity. No reopening date has been announced.

Who Is Affected and What Happens If You Leave

The people excluded are those without an active Pro $200 subscription. Existing $200 renewals and new or existing Pro $100 subscriptions continue. A personal Pro subscription is also independent from a ChatGPT Business workspace.

Pro $100 includes five times the listed usage allowance of ChatGPT Plus, while Pro $200 includes 20 times the listed usage allowance. The $100 tier costs half as much and provides one-quarter of the $200 tier’s listed allowance. Some models still have separate limits.

Listed ChatGPT Pro usage allowance relative to Plus: Pro $100 at 5× and Pro $200 at 20×. Some models have separate usage limits.

For a current $200 subscriber, the important boundary is whether the plan is still active:

  • Cancellation or Downgrade: The subscriber keeps Pro $200 until the billing cycle ends and can undo the change before then. Once the plan ends or moves to Pro $100, it cannot be restored during the pause.
  • Failed Renewal: A chatgpt.com subscriber receives an email with recovery options. Apple and Google Play subscribers use their app store’s recovery process. Re-entry is blocked only if the subscription is canceled.
  • Refund or Promotion: A refund has this effect only if it also cancels Pro $200. Access then ends immediately and the account moves to Free. A promotion matters only if it ends Pro $200 or moves the subscriber to another plan. New Pro $200 promo redemptions are paused; already redeemed active ones are unaffected. Usage-credit promotions are separate.

Resets Continue Alongside the Pause

OpenAI has used resets during the Astra launch. The company announced a global paid-subscription reset so subscribers could keep using Astra. OpenAI has also said existing users can expect occasional resets.

Other resets addressed specific failures. OpenAI announced replacement resets for affected Work and Codex users after a banked reset did not fully apply, then paired another reset with Astra quality fixes in its latest update.

What do I think of this?

I think the pause is the right capacity decision if the alternative is worse Astra service for people already paying $200. The policy’s weakness is reversibility: cancellation, downgrade, a refund that cancels Pro $200, or a plan-changing promotion can turn an ordinary account decision into a one-way exit for an unknown period.

OpenAI should place a prominent warning inside every affected billing flow before the user confirms it. If I depended on the $200 tier’s 20X allowance for Astra or Codex work, I would keep the subscription until re-entry opens. If Pro $100 is enough, downgrading can still make sense, but the decision should be treated as final until OpenAI announces otherwise.
